The AmBank Group-SportExcel International Junior Golf Championship 2017 is an important annual event for top junior across Asia Pacific and the 12th edition is no different. Not only that the 12th AmBank Group-SportExcel International Junior Golf Championship 2017 is a counting event for the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), it also awards the BEST player from white OR blue teeing ground to a ONE year scholarship to the prestigious Hills Golf Academy in Gold Coast, Australia.

Apart from the 1 year scholarship, 4 best Malaysians from category A and B, both for the boys and girls will receive a ONE month scholarship to the same academy. However, in the event that the one year scholarship is won by a Malaysian, 1 of the 4 ONE month scholarship will be awarded to a foreign junior player.

International superstar golfers Jason Day of Australia and Yanni Tseng of Taiwan are two of the academy’s success stories.

Currently, there are 2 Malaysian junior golfers who is currently under the Hills Golf Academy ONE year scholarships. They are Ashley Lau, who has been at the Hills Academy since 2015, and Zubair Firdaus. Both has shown great progress under since getting into the Hills Academy. Ashley Lau managed to retain her back-to-back scholarships. Both Ashley and Zubair have recorded multiple wins in Asia Pacific events.

Ashley for example, was the best amateur at the 2016 Sime Darby LPGA. She has also won a bronze in the 2017 SEA Games. Zubair on the other hand, the younger of the two, won Hainan International Junior Golf Championship 2017 held in Haikou.

Zubair on the other hand has 7 wins in the junior amateur level in 2017 since getting into Hills Golf Academy. His sweetest win of 2017 would have to be China Hainan Junior Golf Classic and the Ciputra Jakarta World Junior Championship.
