The tournament, part of the prestigious World Amateur Golf Ranking where the players to play and accumulate points for the world ranking, is to identify and groom young golfers under 21 with handicap 12 and below, in the country. The tournament with its tagline “In Search of Malaysian Tiger” is part of an event and talent scouting activity to produce golf professionals in the league of Tiger Woods. A total of 90 young golfers under 21 years old have been invited to take part – 53 each for boys and girls of the age category and 33 for those under 15. The event debuted in 2006 in association with the Ministry for Youth and Sports and the Malaysian Golf Association. The response to this event was encouraging, prompting TSMCG to turn the event into an annual feature of the organization. The event has since received MGA’s official sanction too and is now officially listed in the MGA calendar events. The main Prize for the Winners (both boys & girls category) will be awarded in the form of a scholarship for training at a recognized Golf academy approved by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Charity Golf. For other winners, the prizes will be awarded in the form of grant and/or reimbursement for claims for coaching fees, purchase of golf equipment, and out-of-pocket expenses for training and tournament expenses for the development of golf only. The TSM Golf Challenge is under the patronage of YBhg Tan Sri Muhyiddin Bin Hj Mohd. Yassin, who is also an avid golfer, is organized like a Professional Tour event the 100 youngsters who are among the crème de la crème of Malaysian golf are invited to compete with each other for honors. He said youngsters who would finish among the top few in the tournament would be given the opportunity to have a formal lesson by golf professionals to enable them to further raise the standard of their game.
