Swinging for Gold: TAR UMT Backs Golf Rising Star’s Aspirations
Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT)’s latest signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is a step closer for young golfing prodigy, Ng Jing Xuen or JX Ng’s dream of winning a gold medal in the 2028 Olympics. The rising star’s recent significant achievement is winning a Gold medal in the 32nd SEA Games last year, making her the first national female golfer to win a Gold medal in the Women’s Individual category at the SEA Games. With such promising potential shown by the 16-year old star, TAR UMT is set to support JX Ng as she works towards her aim of winning Gold in the next Olympics. As remarked by Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of TAR UMT’s Board of Governors (BOG) and Alumni Council who said, “TAR UMT’s unwavering support for JX is driven by our shared aspiration to contribute to Malaysia’s pursuit of an Olympic Gold Medal. We believe that with the right coaching, scientific support, and unwavering determination, JX has the potential to become a trailblazer in the world of golf. To further support her skills, the University through its experts in the fields of Sports and Exercise Science and Sports Coaching and Performance Analysis will be providing JX Ng with complimentary Sports Science consultancy services. In addition, JX Ng will also gain access to TAR UMT’s state-of-the-art sports and exercise facilities. Additionally, as a Golf Ambassador, she will be eligible for a 100% sports scholarship, subject to meeting our academic entry requirements.”
Dr Chan Kai Quin, the Associate Dean for the Department of Sports Science, Faculty of Applied Sciences (FOAS) gave an overview of how his team will be working closely with JX Ng. “We will be having thorough discussions with JX to learn more about her strengths and the areas she wants to improve on before we can proceed with the specific trainings and programmes to help her. Since she is a golfer, besides her physical fitness, we will also focus on how to improve and enhance her stability, balance and also her swing. We will be conducting thorough tests using the University’s state-of-the art equipment and machines which will provide us with helpful data to fine-tune our findings to help JX in her golfing,” he detailed. With the MoU formalised, JX Ng is the official Golf Ambassador for TAR UMT and also the University’s first-ever ambassador in sports. “I am grateful to TAR UMT to be chosen as the University’s Golf Ambassador. My ultimate goal is to compete and win in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and my dream is to win a Gold in the Olympics. To achieve these, I aim to improve and maintain my physical and mental fitness and strengthen my technical and mechanical skills. I know that TAR UMT will be able to help me a lot in terms of the physical and technical aspects. The gym and sporting equipment will be good tools to strengthen my physical fitness and I know I will be learning and improving a lot of the technical aspects as I work with the faculty,” she shared. The MoU was signed by Prof Dato’ Indera Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT and Mr Ng Seong Hoi, JX Ng’s father.
