Teen Xin Yao excels by winning Under-18 title in Johor
Youngster Wang Xin Yao was one of the shining stars for Malaysia in the SportExcel International Junior Golf Championships when she emerged as the overall champion in the girls’ Under-18 category. The 16-year-old, who has a handicap of 1.4, did well to score a total of four-over 220 to take home the title after three rounds at the Tanjong Puteri Golf and Resort in Johor on Sunday. Xin Yao was delighted with the win. “This tournament was a wonderful experience for me, it was an amazing competition to participate in,” said Xin Yao. “There was a strong field of players, which made it more interesting. “The course was in great shape and condition as well. “All three of my rounds were pretty solid with my long and short game. Putting was slightly off in the first round but I managed to get it back on the last two days. “It’s definitely amazing to be winning in such a tournament with all my family and friends with me.” Xin Yao and the other winners and those who finished runners-up were awarded a direct entry to the Mazda US College Prep Championship at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand from Nov 8-10 as well as the FCG Callaway Championship in San Diego, California which will be held in July next year. Meanwhile, Thailand’s Ajalawich Anantasethakul was crowned champion in the boys’ Under-18 after he scored a total of one under 217.
